Vida Loca

Vida Loca, 4615 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC, 202-537-0421, way up on Wisconsin, near Maryland. (Metro Trip Planner – opens in new window) [Citysearch]
An inconsistent menu, and they do not have Feijoada every night. Some feijoada is better than none at all, but not my first choice in the Brazilian department.
Anyone know if this place is still open?

The Grill from Ipanema – CLOSED

The Grill from Ipanema, they just changed the name, though, and redid the decor, web site, 1858 Columbia Road NW, Washington, DC, 202-986-0757 (Metro Trip Planner – opens in new window) [Washingtonian | WaPo | City Paper | food-plan | openlist | Yelp | Gayot]

Update October 2007: CLOSED

For my tastes, Brazil is one of the two or three best food countries in the world, so comparisons are tough. But this is good enough to enjoy. Get the feijoada, a stewed mix of black beans, meats, sausage, collard greens, and the powdery farina. Make sure you add in the orange slices. A treat. Some of the other dishes are mediocre. This place stands or dies on its Feijoada. It stands.

No, you didn’t read the category heading (Cajun-Thai) wrong. This is a dual restaurant, rather than an attempt to mix. A cute idea, but is there really any advantage in it?

Taqueria Poblano

Taqueria Poblano, web site, 2400-B Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA, 703-548-8226, closed Tuesdays. Plus a branch at 2503A N. Harrison Street, Arlington, VA, 703-237-8250, right off of Rt. 29 by the Harris Teeter, this branch open every day but closed 3-5 weekdays. (Metro Trip Planner – opens in new window) [Falls Church News-Press | Washingtonian | WaPo | City Paper | food-plan | Don Rockwell | openlist | Yelp]
Taquerias have some of the best Mexican food in Houston, parts of L.A., or the southwestern side of Chicago. This place was quite good when it opened but now it is in decline. It is too commercial and the branch is content to serve reheated, not totally freshly cooked food. It is not moving in a promising direction.

Restaurant Cosmopolitan

Cosmopolitan Bakery, Carry Out & Catering, formerly Restaurant Cosmopolitan, web site, 5902A N. Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA, between T-Nails and Euro Foods, across from the Huntington Metro Station in Huntington Square, 703-329-3303 (Metro Trip Planner – opens in new window) [Hobnob Blog | Suburban Tasteland]

UPDATE: This place has changed its name to Cosmopolitan Grill (web site) and moved to 7770 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA.

I don’t yet have exact information. Food in Bosnia is excellent, I am told this leans closer to the Austro-Hungarian direction (dollop of sour cream on the top) than to Turkish.

I am also told you can find Bosnian food in Washington Grill, on Vermont Avenue NW, just north of K Street NW. They have fried veal sausages wrapped in bread and eaten with raw onions and a sauce called ivar, consisting of peppers and eggplant.

Recommended for Bolivian pastries and breads. One Bolivian reader recommends the “api, a purplish corn-based drink, served hot” with cinnamon, I may stick with jellyfish. The chicharron and mote are recommended as well.

NOW CLOSED. Good peanut soup when they have it, it has half a foot in the Argentinean and Peruvian camps as well. Not a top performer in any single area, but useful to have around.
