Updated review January 4, 2012 here.

In the former home of Samadi Sweets, they have kept the savory desserts. I like this place, it is mostly kabobs but one stew or koresh each day. Good zereshk polo, when they have it.

Duke Kabab

Duke Kabab, 6301 Little River Turnpike, Suite 140, Alexandria, VA, 703-256-0009, across from the street from the Alexandria Tower Records. (Metro Trip Planner – opens in new window) [zabihah | City Paper | openlist | Yelp]
Above average kebabs. More truly ethnic than Moby Dick, and a more Persian atmosphere.

Currently the best place for Persian stews, not as plentiful in this area as they used to be. And stews are the yummiest and most original part of Persian food. Good buffet, too. Highly recommended. Fesenjan is a true sensual delight, also, chicken doused in pomegranate and walnut sauce, one of the great Persian dishes.

Van Dorn Station

One of Northern Virginia’s premier strip malls for food is Van Dorn Station (the Comcast Alexandria office is here). It has Thai (Thai Lemon Grass), Japanese (Akasaka), Kabobs (Kabul Kabob House), Pho (Pho Viet Flare), Mexican and Salvadoran (El Paraiso), Italian (Savios), and some good ethnic groceries (Norma’s Latin Market). Just south of Edsall, and a bit north of the Beltway ramps on Van Dorn.
Note that the Giant parking lot, which is at the corner of Edsall Road and South Van Dorn Street, does not connect to the Van Dorn Station parking lot, and most online maps show Van Dorn Station addresses as much closer to Edsall Road than they are. The entrance to Van Dorn Station is between South Pickett Street and Edsall Road, and closer to South Pickett Street. (The address marker on this map, 548 S Van Doren Street, is on Savios.)

Mexican

Mexican
How can I get good Mexican food around here? That is perhaps the most common query I receive. It is getting better just about every month. We are not yet Houston, LA, or Chicago, but your best options are listed in the “Mexican” catgeory.

Rose Restaurant – Closed

Rose Restaurant, formerly Café Rose, 300 W. Broad St., Falls Church, 532-1700, not far from Rt. 29.
Attached to a motel, and very much a mom and pop. They’re cooking just for you, and will even give you advice about how to eat it. Very good and a classic Virginia experience. Get the Gourmet Sabzi [Ghorma Sabzi, properly], and ask for the specials. Recommended, and they also are open at funny times when no one else is, other than the Koreans that is.
This place is now gone, due to eminent domain. I will keep up the review as a form of protest.
Update March 4, 2007: Open again in Vienna, VA, on Rt.123, it is excellent, both the kabobs and the stews, definitely recommended. Review here.

Not as popular as it once was, time is passing it by. The Chile Rellenos are OK, but I don’t go here any more.

Mom and pop Mexican, in Chantilly. This was once pretty good, now it is just ordinary.

Occasionally they reheat bad food so beware. Good atmosphere, though the possibility of leering men cannot be dismissed and indeed is to be expected. Overall it has been eclipsed by the competition.
